That's a good point, though a relatively easy fix. First, you use a standardized format for all your file storage (such as PDF). When there is a transition to a new format (i.e., PDFs will no longer be supported at such and such point) you use whatever software is available to convert all your stored files to the new format.

One of the arguments against going all-digital cropped up about three weeks ago when a museum here in the UK (can't remember which one) admitted that it had lost access to a some of its archive because the proprietary formats were now no longer supported in software or hardware.

Ideally, paperless is the way to go; as you say, less space, more accessible to everyone who needs it, don't kill as many trees, etc. But if you archive a file and then need to return to it 10 years down the line can you be sure that you'll still be able to access it?

Thanks Susan. It feels good knowing I'll be taking the steps toward independence (albeit slow and small steps), but like they said in What About Bob, "Baby steps out the office. Baby steps down the hall...."

Welcome to the fold. I like your attitude about Third Gen Lawyer...kind of reminds me of original Coke, the fiasco of changing the formula when it didn't need to be improved upon, then going back to Coke Classic after the public relations bruhaha and subsequent consumer rebellion. I'll be watching your progress!
